2020 is the perfect year to check off a destination that few can boast: Antarctica. The White Continent is chalk full of wonder, beauty, and exploration. And, a trip to Antarctica can easily incorporate even more! Many itineraries include stops to the historic Falkland Islands, as well as South Georgia. The Falklands is home to many impressive animal species, including 5 species of penguins – 3 of which you won’t see in Antarctica! South Georgia is perhaps most known for being where Ernest Shackleton steered his open boat to rescue his crew of the Endurance from their ill-fated Antarctic Expedition of 1914-17. This is also where Shackleton chose to be buried. So, if you’re voyaging all the way to Antarctica, add a few days to experience these incredible places.

At nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, Quito is one of the highest capital cities on earth, second only to La Paz in Bolivia. Although known as the gateway to either the Amazon or the Galapagos Islands, Quito has charms in its own right. It ranks among the most historic, beautiful and well-preserved cities in the world, having become one of the first UNESCO World Heritage sites. Make sure to spend some time in this breathtaking city and see, among other things, Calle La Ronda (a beautiful walking street), the gold-leaf decorated Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus, and the “Telefériqo,” an aerial tramway that goes up the side of a volcano and gives sweeping views of Quito. Don’t forget to stop at the monument on the equator, La Mitad del Mindo, located about half an hour outside of the city.

Our staff has chosen Botswana as one of our top travel recommendations in 2020 because of the vast array of landscapes, activities, and wildlife available! Northern Botswana boasts the famous Okavango Delta, a watery landscape providing the opportunity to take a mokoro (traditional canoe) ride through the channels of the Delta, while bush walks in the Khwai Private Reserve allow you to get out into the wilderness for close-up interactions. Chobe National Park has the largest concentration of elephants in southern Africa, and the Chobe River is a unique opportunity for boat-based safari. Then, just a few hours south, lie the Makagadikgadi Salt Pans, a vast, reaching desert-like atmosphere, providing a stark contrast to the rich waterways and green forests of its neighbors.

Peru’s charms go from the Pacific Coast all the way up to the soaring heights of the Andes. The birthplace of ceviche is also the home of Machu Picchu, the majestic Incan citadel hidden away in the Andes and never discovered by the Spanish Conquistadors. Further evidence of more ancient cultures can be found at the Nazca Lines, huge geoglyphs thought to be around 2,500 years old. More recently, Peru has become a destination for foodies, eager to try the cuisine that both captures the ingredients of the indigenous population as well as the fusion with the cuisines of colonizers and immigrants.
