Each is individually unique, and all have a history spanning more than 100 years. This suggested self-drive itinerary outlines how you can combine several of these hotels into an independent tour traveling by rental car.

Day 1Departure from US

Day 2Arrive Bergen, Norway | Meals: D

Pick up your rental car at the airport and drive the short distance to Solstrand Hotel. Solstrand Hotel is beautifully situated on the Bjørnefjord, only 20 miles from the center of Bergen. The hotel is an ideal base for day trips into the city of Bergen, or to explore the area. Solstrand offers a complete wellness area that includes pools, sauna, gym, and a dock to jump into the fjord. Day 3In and Around Bergen | Meals: B D

Either spend the day relaxing at Solstrand, or drive into Bergen to explore its charm and historic atmosphere. A hike or Fløibanen Funicular journey up to the top of Mount Fløyen is a must for first-time visitors to the city. There is great shopping in the old Hanseatic wharf, Bryggen, as well as numerous fascinating museums and historic sights to be found in Bergen. Overnight at Solstrand Hotel

Day 4Hardangerfjord | Meals: B D

Depart Solstrand this morning, driving along Norway’s many scenic rivers and fjords along the way to Hardangerfjord. Stop and see Vøringsfossen Waterfall and the Hardangervidda Nature Center in Eidfjord before your end your drive in Lofthus for an overnight at the beautiful Hotel Ullensvang. With a view overlooking the Hardangerfjord, Hotel Ullesvang has a private beach and pool to enjoy this evening. Overnight at Hotel Ullensvang

Day 5Sognefjord | Meals: B D

Drive from Lofthus via Voss and the village of Vik where you meet up with the mighty Sognefjord, known as the “King of the Fjords”. Ferry across the Sognefjord, and continue on to Balestrand. Your hotel for the evening is the historic Kviknes Hotel, featuring traditional Norwegian antiques and four generations of the Kvikne family’s art collection. Tonight enjoy the famous Kviknes buffet dinner, featuring locally sourced ingredients prepared in classic Norwegian dishes. Overnight at Kviknes Hotel

Day 6Nordfjord | Meals: B D

Drive over Gaularfjell Mountain, stop at the Briksdal Glacier where it is suggested you either hike or take a motorized cart up to the glacier for a closer exploration. From there head to Loen, a great base for mountain hikes, glacier walks, and fjord tours. Alexandra Hotel in Loen is your accommodation for the evening. Enjoy a ride up the nearby Loen Skylift for exquisite views of the fjord, or just hang out in the hotel’s indoor/outdoor pool and spa. Overnight at Hotel Alexandra

Day 7Geirangerfjord | Meals: B D

Spectacular scenery awaits you today as you venture deeper into fjord country, ending at the famous village of Geiranger. Take an optional two-hour fjord cruise to see the famous waterfalls of the Geirangerfjord. Tonight you will stay at Hotel Union, overlooking the village and the fjord. Perhaps this evening take in the hotel’s vintage car collection or have a drink in the lobby bar. Overnight at Hotel Union

Day 8Geirangerfjord and Ålesund | Meals: B

Depart Geiranger this morning and head north to take the mountain pass Trollstigen. Featuring hair pin turns and stunning views, this detour on your way to Ålesund this morning is not to be missed. Continue to Ålesund, a picturesque coastal city featuring one of the best views in Norway, Aksla Viewpoint. Hotel Brosundet is located overlooking the water in one of the city’s famous Art Nouveau structures. Overnight at Hotel Brosundet

Day 9Depart Ålesund, Norway| Meals: B

Return your rental car to the airport for your flight to Oslo in connection with return flight to the US – or extend your stay in Scandinavia!
