This tour introduces you to Laos with a Mekong River cruise to the UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang, the must-see in Laos. A selection of local foods, both basic countryside and in modern-Lao restaurants in Luang Prabang, will familiarize you with the delicious Lao cuisine and spending a night to start in Thailand will broaden your experience in Southeast Asia. This tour can be easily combined with a visit to Thailand and other neighboring countries

Day 1Arrive Chiang Rai, Thailand & the Golden Triangle | Meals: L D

Arrive Chiang Rai Airport and transfer to Chiang Saen, the former capital of the first Thai Kingdom, situated on the Mekong River bordering Laos. On the way, visit Vat Phra Dhat Jom Kitti and climb the 383 steps to the top of the hill. Continue by longtail speedboat on the Mekong River towards the Golden Triangle where the borders of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos come together. Overnight in Chiang Saen

Day 2River Journey to Laos | Meals: B L D

Transfer to the border crossing from Thailand to Laos and embark on the journey down the Mekong River. The boat will make a stop at a traditional village where you can observe the daily life of ethnic minorities and their talented craftsmanship. Lunch is served on board. The river cruise arrives at Luang Say Lodge near Pakbeng before sunset, with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery of the river and admire the surrounding nature. Disembark for an overnight on land. A Laotian dinner is served on the open-air terrace overlooking the river. Overnight at Luang Say Lodge

Day 3Cruise to Luang Prabang & Visit Pak Ou Caves | Meals: B L D

The cruise departs for another day of nature discovery along the legendary river. After enjoying the sights of granite cliffs and sparkling sandy shores, the boat makes a stop at the hill tribe village of Baw, where you can watch the traditional process of making Lao whiskey (lao lao). Lunch is served on board with a selection of courses from Laos’ cuisine. Opposite the mouth of the Nam Ou River, the boat stops at Pak Ou Caves, famous for housing over 2,500 Buddha images of all sizes and for being a place of pilgrimage for locals. Arrive in Luang Prabang and transfer to your hotel for dinner. Overnight in Luang Prabang

Day 4Alms Giving and Kuang Si Waterfall | Meals: B L D

Early in the morning, observe the daily alms giving ceremony as the monks make their rounds receiving their daily rice from the townspeople. This ritual is an integral part of Lao people’s life. Later, visit the Royal Palace Museum with important treasures of Laos’ more recent past and Vat Xieng Thong, dating back from the 16th century, the oldest and most beautiful temple of this UNESCO town. The roof sweeps low to the ground and glass-colored panels adorn the walls of the chapels. Transfer to Kuang Si waterfall where, after a short walk through the forest, you can take a swim in one of the clear pools. See the Asian bear sanctuary and, on the way back to Luang Prabang, visit the beautiful Butterfly Park. If time permits, climb the 300 steps up Mt. Phousi hill for sunset and a great view of the city. Overnight in Luang Prabang

Day 5Luang Prabang at Leisure | Meals: B

Today is at leisure to immerse yourself in the laid-back lifestyle of Luang Pragang or, if you want to know more about Laotian cuisine, enjoy a cooking class. Overnight in Luang Prabang

Day 6Depart Luang Prabang | Meals: B

Transfer to the airport for your departure flight – or extend your stay in Asia!
