For a brush with real magic, Lapland is the place to visit! Pine trees sagging with snow, wild reindeer, the Northern Lights, and a visit to Santa Claus’ home are just some of the magical experiences on this escorted tour. You will also enjoy cultural activities with the Sámi people in Saariselkä and sleeping under the night sky in a glass igloo. For the most adventurous part of you, there will be opportunities to catch a King Crab and swim in the frozen waters of the Gulf of Bothnia. Travel comfortably and without worries through the icy landscape of Lapland.

Day 1Departure from US

Day 2Arrival in Oslo, Norway

Upon arrival, take the airport train transfer to the city center. The remainder of the day and evening is at leisure to explore Oslo on your own. Oslo is a nature-centric city, with wooded areas and natural experiences never far away. A trip to Holmenkollen Ski Jump to try your hand at many winter activities and experience amazing views is recommended. If you choose to stay in the city center, perhaps visit the island Bygdøy to see the many museums there, including the Viking Ship Museum. Overnight in Oslo

Day 3Arrival in Kirkenes, Norway | Meals: B

Early this morning you fly from Oslo to Kirkenes. Arrive at Kirkenes Airport and transfer to your hotel for check-in. Kirkenes is located in the northern arm of Norway that reaches up and east over Finland and is so close to Russia that some signage is also in Russian. The rest of the day is open for you to explore Kirkenes. Overnight in Kirkenes

Day 4 King Crab Safari | Meals: B L

Today you will embark on a wonderful adventure, heading out onto the sea to fish for the massive king crab, with a feast afterwards. When you return to shore you are bound for Inari, where you will visit the Sajos Sámi Culture Centre to learn more about the people who have made Lapland their home for centuries. Inari holds a great deal of cultural and religious significance to the Sámi people. Then on to Saariselkä for time at leisure. Overnight in Saariselkä

Day 5Reindeer and Glass Igloos | Meals: B L D

Depart Saariselkä this morning and head to a Sámi Reindeer Farm in Sinettä. There you will get to meet the friendly reindeer, practice using the Sámi lasso Suopunki, and even enjoy a sleigh ride pulled by a reindeer through the woods. From the farm you are headed to your accommodation for the evening, the Arctic SnowHotel. Check into your Glass Igloo and enjoy looking at the sky from the comfort and warmth of your bed! A traditional Lappish dinner is included this evening, featuring delicious grilled salmon. For those who are looking for a truly unique experience you can enjoy an optional evening in the snow sauna, and spend the night in a Snow Suite, kept around 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit. Overnight in Glass Igloo or optional Snow Suite

Day 6Visit Santa’s Village |Meals: B L

From Sinettä you will travel to Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland. Along the banks of the Kemi-Joki River you will stop at a Husky Farm and meet the friendly animals. After an introduction and some safety instruction, ride out into the forest on a sled being pulled by excited huskies. After lunch at the farm you are bound for the Santa Claus Village, the home of Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Send your Christmas cards and then meet the man himself. The rest of the evening is at leisure in Rovaniemi, with the option to join a snowmobile excursion to search for the Northern Lights. Overnight in Rovaniemi

Day 7Sampo Icebreaker Cruise | Meals: B L

This morning you will drive over to the port city of Kemi. During the winter months Kemi has a massive Snow Castle that regularly hosts weddings in its chapel, and guests in its restaurant and hotel. Enjoy some time exploring the castle. This afternoon you will board the Sampo Icebreaker, a ship built for breaking through the Gulf of Bothnia’s ice. As you cruise through the Gulf you can enjoy a tour of the ship, a delicious three-course dinner in the galley, and even don a special suit for swimming in the frozen waters and give it a try. You will return to Rovaniemi for your last night in Lapland. Tonight, you have the option to enjoy dinner in an ice igloo under the Northern Lights. Overnight in Rovaniemi

Day 8Fly to Helsinki | Meals: B

Depart Lapland this morning with a transfer to the airport and your flight to Helsinki. Transfer independently to your hotel and enjoy a final evening in Finland. Overnight in Helsinki

Day 9Depart Helsinki, Finland | Meals: B

Independently transfer to Helsinki airport for your return flight to the US – or extend your stay in Scandinavia!

Optional Excursions

  • Snow Sauna – experience an amazing sauna made of snow and ice, where only the benches are made of wood, soak in the hot tub afterwards looking up at the Lappish sky
  • Snow Suite – spend the night in a specially constructed snow suite on a bed made of ice, snuggled into thermal blankets and a sleeping bag
  • Aurora Borealis Camp Visit by Snowmobile – snowmobile about 6 miles out to the Aurora Borealis Camp and see a film about the Northern Lights in a snow igloo and relax around a roaring bonfire
  • Dinner in Ice Igloo – visit a massive ice igloo for a traditional Lappish dinner followed by time outside around a fire watching for the Northern Lights *this excursion may run on Day 8 or 9, depending on weather conditions
