Itinerary
This is a Borton Overseas Signature Journey – a premier, small-group tour hosted by an Africa Destination Specialist.

Sunday, November 3Arrive Cape Town, South Africa

On arrival at Cape Town’s International Airport, we’ll be transferred by private motorcoach to our hotel, where we can relax after a long flight and get a good night’s rest. Overnight at President Hotel, Cape Town

Monday, November 4Tour of Cape Town | Meals: B L

After breakfast at our hotel, we’ll start our South Africa journey off with a full-day tour of Cape Town, known as “The Mother City” as it was the first formally established city in South Africa back in 1652. Take the cable car to the top of Table Mountain for incredible panorama views. A short hike later, we peer down at the fascinating city sprawled out before us, and view magnificent stretches of ocean. Next, we descend and wander through the inner city, soaking up the magical vibe of Cape Town. Focusing on food, design, arts and crafts we uncover a selection of historical sites, such as Company’s Garden, Green Market Square and St George’s Cathedral. Continue your exploration heading to the Bo-Kaap, with its brightly colored 17th century houses, cobble stone streets, Muslim shrines and beautiful mosques. Visit local upliftment projects and uncover the talent born of this city, and exhibited in galleries, street art installations and within the urban regeneration of historical suburbs. End the day mingling with locals at a cool city haunt, rooftop bar or beach cove, sundowners in hand before returning to the hotel.

The evening is at your leisure, with many options for dining. Overnight at President Hotel, Cape Town

Tuesday, November 5Cape Peninsula excursion | Meals: B L

Today we head off to explore the Cape Peninsula to be awed by stunning coastal scenery and amused by penguins. Our tour begins at Kalk Bay, best known for its working fishing harbor and bohemian feel. Time given to shop & browse the arts, crafts and boutiques. Next, we head to Simon’s Town, with a rich history. Bringing this naval town to life is an insight into the shark diving industry and stories of the only dog ever enlisted in the Royal Navy.

Before heading into the Cape Peninsula, we search for a splinter colony of rogue penguins, on a beach known only to locals. Our tour continues with a gentle hike in the Cape Peninsula Reserve, exploring secluded beaches and this region’s unique wildlife. The return journey weaves back to Cape Town via Noordhoek Farm Village, a food artisan hub of the Peninsula, where we can enjoy a cheeky “Kick Ass” ice cream or a coffee. Time permitting, we’ll stop at a local brewery, vineyard, beach or scenic look-out.

Return to the hotel, where the evening is at your leisure. Overnight at President Hotel, Cape Town

Wednesday, November 6Wine Estates & Historic Towns | Meals: B L

We explore one of the most scenically beautiful areas in South Africa. Spend time in Stellenbosch, browsing through its wealth of appealing stores, museums and tempting cafes. Your tasting experience will commence at one of the iconic wine estates, pairing wine with breath-taking mountain ranges and lush gardens. See a collection of contemporary art, the highest-growing vines, and – from an elevated point – take in the stunning vistas over an old-world estate.

After lunch, we visit some of the smaller, boutique and family-owned wine estates for a more intimate wine tasting. Discover Franschhoek, established by the French Huguenots in 1688, this town retains its historic charm but has fused it with a contemporary vibe. We return to our hotel in Cape Town for the evening. Overnight at President Hotel, Cape Town

Thursday, November 7Cape Town on own & African dining experience | Meals: B D

Day at leisure to explore the area on your own. This evening, we’ll bid farewell to Cape Town with a dining event at the GOLD Restaurant.. Overnight at President Hotel, Cape Town

Friday, November 8The Garden Route to Oudsthoorn | Meals: B L D

We depart Cape Town today and head out towards the Garden Route. Visit the Cango Caves, a cultural and natural landmark in South Africa. The 20-million-year-old Cango Caves system consists of a series of hidden chambers cut deep into a thick limestone rock layer. Located in the Swartberg Mountains, it’s the biggest show cave in the country.

From there, we continue to a working ostrich farm for a tour and lunch. Oudsthoorn is the ostrich capital of the world. In the 1800s, enterprising farmers realized the area was ideal for raising ostriches to supply feathers for the European and British fashion industries. In modern times, ostrich meat is a popular alternative to beef or lamb. Hotel arrival in the afternoon, with some free time before dinner at the hotel’s Colony Restaurant. Overnight at Queen’s Hotel Oudtshoorn

Saturday, November 9Tsitsikamma National Park - Knysna coastal village | Meals: B L

Our exploration of the Garden Route continues: between the eclipsing green mountains of the Eastern Cape and the rolling blue Indian Ocean lies the magical Tsitsikamma National Park. With the rocky coastline, ancient breath-taking forests, sites of cultural significance and the famous Storms River Mouth, this park is one of the most visibly spectacular destinations in the country. The earliest inhabitants of the area were the Khoi people who gave the region its name – Tsitsikamma roughly translates to a “place of much water.”

We’ll then arrive in Knysna, a coastal village surrounded by indigenous forests, miles of beaches, rivers and lakes, which will be our home for two nights. We’ll have lunch and time afterwards at the Knysna Waterfront for exploring and shopping. Evening at leisure. Overnight at Protea Hotel by Marriott, Knysna Quays

Sunday, November 10Featherbed Nature Reserve | Meals: B L D

The Knysna Lagoon, actually an estuary, has five fresh water rivers flowing in from the surrounding Outeniqua Mountains, meeting with the surge of sea water from the Indian Ocean through the mighty headlands – known as the ‘Knysna Heads’ – the grand sandstone cliffs towering above the entrance to the Knysna Lagoon. The Featherbed Nature Reserve, situated on a protected portion of the Western Head in Knysna, is privately owned and is the premier eco-experience on the Garden Route. To protect its natural splendor, only a limited number of people are able to visit each day and must be guided. Visitors access the reserve only by ferry. Specialist guides will show us dramatic scenery and indigenous plants, and we may have the chance to spot a rare coastal bird called the Black African Oyster Catcher, as well as the rare Blue Duiker, one of the smallest antelopes in the world. Featherbed is also home to a breeding program for the Knysna Loerie, and supports research into conservation of an endangered species of sea horse.

We’ll enjoy a buffet lunch at an outdoor restaurant setting under a canopy of Milkwood trees before returning by ferry. The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure. This evening we’ll enjoy a 3-course dinner at Sirocco’s Restaurant, on the water’s edge of Knysna’s trendy Thesen Harbour Town. Overnight at Protea Hotel by Marriott, Knysna Quays

Monday, November 11Fly to Johannesburg - Pilanesberg National Park | Meals: B L D

We bid farewell to South Africa’s coast as we transfer to the George Airport for a flight to Johannesburg. On arrival, we’ll meet our motorcoach transfer to Pilanesberg National Park, three hours north of the city in South Africa’s interior. After check-in and lunch at the lodge, we’ll head out on an afternoon game drive in the park!

Our safari lodge is located in the North West Province of South Africa, in the malaria-free Pilanesberg National Park. The lodge is situated in a prime location for game viewing, with access to more than 135,000 acres of wilderness. The Pilanesberg is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the endangered black rhino. Visitors can also see other big game animals such as elephants, lions and leopards, as well as a variety of bird species.

Tuesday, November 12Black Rhino Game Lodge | Meals: B L D

First of two full days in Pilanesberg, looking for wildlife on morning and afternoon game drives. Black Rhino Game Lodge offers a variety of safari activities that allow guests to experience the beauty and wildlife of Africa. Game viewing is one of the most popular activities on an African safari, providing visitors with an opportunity to see and photograph a wide variety of wildlife in their natural habitat. Overnight at Black Rhino Game Lodge

Wednesday, November 13Wildlife & Game Drives | Meals: B L D

Another day in Pilanesberg National Park. During a game drive, visitors will typically ride in open-sided 4×4 vehicles, led by experienced guides who are knowledgeable about the area and its wildlife. Early morning and late afternoon game drives are the most popular, as these times offer the best chances of spotting wildlife when they are most active.

Guests can go on guided walks with experienced guides, who will take them through the wilderness to learn about the smaller details of the environment, such as tracks, plants, and insects. Walking safaris are conducted with an experienced guide who is knowledgeable about the local wildlife and ecosystems. Guides may also have specialized training in wilderness first aid.
Note: this is an optional activity that must be reserved in advance for additional cost; activity requires a minimum number of participants.

Within walking distance of the lodge is a hide designed for observing and photographing wildlife in their natural habitat without being detected by the animals. Overnight at Black Rhino Game Lodge
