The wonderful Tanzanian guides are the key – young, enthusiastic, professional, and highly trained. Accommodations are a delightful mix; small guest houses, boutique lodges, permanent tented lodges, and a few nights in seasonal semi-mobile tented camps. For the latter, the tents are roomy with comfy camp beds fitted with linens and blankets, and include ensuite toilet and bucket shower. Camp locations change seasonally to sites near the best game areas.

Itinerary
This is an escorted tour. Our Destination Specialists can also offer this tour as a private safari, customized to your travel preferences.

Day 1Arrive Kilimanjaro/Arusha, Tanzania

Arrive Kilimanjaro airport, where you will be transferred to Arusha and your hotel for a welcome rest after the long journey. Welcome to Africa! Overnight in Arusha

Days 2-3Exploring Tarangire National Park | Meals: B L D

After breakfast you will depart for Tarangire National Park, Tanzania’s third largest national park and sanctuary for an unusually large elephant population. The park is bustling with diverse wildlife, set amid majestic baobab trees. During the dry season, the animals congregate along the banks of the Tarangire River, which provides the only permanent water supply in Maasai land. Your days are filled with game drives and walking excursions with the Maasai. Overnight at Maramboi Tented Camp or Lake Burunge Tented Camp

Maramboi Tented Camp

Day 4Great Rift Valley and Karatu Local Markets | Meals: B L D

Take part in an early morning walk at Tarangire before departing for Karatu, which lies on the outer slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater. Cross the floor of the Great Rift Valley near Lake Manyara. Then, mingle with villagers at local markets such as Mto-wa-Mbu or Karatu. Shopping and bargaining for bolts of cloth, crafts, and local produce will immerse you in a daily ritual of African life. In the afternoon you have the opportunity to visit a local school, and then drive to Lake Eyasi and arrive at your camp for a relaxing evening. Overnight at Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp or Lake Eyasi Safari Lodge

Day 5Lake Eyasi | Meals: B L D

Early morning hunting-gathering with Bushmen (Wahadzabe) hunters, or quietly observe the morning routine of the settlement. Your local guide will interpret for you and discuss hunting techniques still used by the tribes. This dry and rugged landscape is inhabited by Bushmen who live in nomadic groups hunting with bow and arrow and gathering roots, tubers, and wild fruits. Be prepared for an extraordinary cross-cultural experience as you join these nomadic Bushmen in their daily life. In the afternoon you can also visit the Datoga, a tribe of semi-nomadic pastoralists who migrated into this area looking for good grazing land many decades ago, who are interesting people to visit. They have so far resisted neighboring tribes’ cultural infiltrations. The women, still wearing locally fat-treated goatskin gowns, carve their faces and bodies to look prettier and are usually seen. Learning about their history is fascinating. Overnight at Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp or Lake Eyasi Safari Lodge

Days 6-7Exploring the Ngorongoro Crater | Meals: B L D

Early morning, depart to Ngorongoro Crater with picnic lunch. Descend into the 102-square-mile Ngorongoro Crater to view game on the vast grasslands of the crater floor.

Surrounded by Tanzania’s highlands, this UNESCO-listed crater is said to be the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Visitors can look forward to spotting the world-renowned Big Five and a host of other wildlife species, including large herds of zebra and wildebeest. An afternoon visit to a Maasai village is possible, where herdsmen are often grazing their cattle around the crater rim. Overnight at Ngorongoro Farm House, Tloma Lodge or Ngorongoro Farm Valley Lodge

Ngorongoro Farmhouse

Day 8Olduvai Gorge and Serengeti National Park | Meals: B L D

A morning drive will take you to the Serengeti plains, stopping en-route at the Olduvai Gorge, where Mary Leakey discovered remains of Australopithecus Homo habilis and Homo erectus.

Serengeti National Park is perhaps the most impressive wildlife sanctuary in the world. These vast, seemingly unending plains are inhabited during the migration by enormous herds of wildebeest and zebra. The herds attract the attention of predators like lion, cheetah, and hyena. Another interesting feature of the Serengeti is the massive granite kopjes, islands of rock standing in a sea of grass. The kopjes provide shelter to a great variety of plants and animals, from the elusive leopard to the tiny dik dik. Exploration of the legendary park is mostly by vehicle.

Spend your nights at the seasonal mobile camp set in a wilderness area. Now THIS is safari! Overnight at Kati Kati Camp or Serengeti Ndutu Kati Kati Camp

Serengeti Kati Kati Camp

Serengeti Ndutu Kati Kati Mobile Camp

Days 9-11Exploring Serengeti National Park | Meals: B L D

Your days are spent exploring this vast wilderness, taking in the beauty of the seemingly unending plains.

The Serengeti is home to the famous migration of over 2.5 million wildebeest and zebra, which attract a host of predatory animals. This is an annual cycle that moves with the urge to find new food and water sources. The flora of the Serengeti is as equally diverse as its wildlife. Overnight at Kati Kati Camp or Serengeti Ndutu Kati Kati Camp
