A geothermal wonderland, Northern Iceland holds many of the secrets to Icleand’s otherworldly reputation. This October, join Twin Cities Meteorologist Sven Sundgaard on an off-the-beaten-path adventure to the Land of Fire & Ice. From the geothermal landscapes and hot springs around Lake Mývatn to the waterfall of the Gods, Goðafoss (Godafoss), the Diamond Circle is sure to inspire your curiosity and sense of adventure. We’ll be on the lookout for whales in Húsavík, the whale watching capital of Europe, and hopefully also catch a glimpse of the elusive Northern Lights. Then you can choose to end your trip with a relaxing soak in the mineral waters at the famous Blue Lagoon! In between all these delights, Sven will be sure to share his knowledge and use his expertise to make this journey as educational as it is fun! Wednesday, October 14Departure from US

Thursday, October 15Arrive Reykjavik, Iceland |B D

Upon arrival we will collect our luggage and transfer by coach to Viking World, where we’ll enjoy breakfast before being transferred into the city center for a brief tour of Reykjavik. Our tour will end at the domestic airport in Reykjavik for check-in for our flight to Akureyri. The flight to Akureyri departs at 11:05 a.m. and takes approximately 45 minutes. Once more we’ll collect our luggage, then transfer by coach to our centrally located hotel. We will have time to freshen up before we have dinner as a group at the hotel restaurant. Friday, October 16Diamond Circle | Meals: B L D

After breakfast we will meet in the lobby to depart on a private tour of the Diamond Circle. The Diamond Circle is an area you will not soon forget, with some of nature’s most creative scenery. Among its highlights are the volcanic and geothermal area around Lake Mývatn, powerful glacial rivers, beautiful canyons, valleys, and great waterfalls. Lunch will be provided along the way. We will end the day in Húsavík, the whale watching capital of Europe. This evening we will enjoy dinner at our hotel. Overnight at Fosshotel Húsavik

Saturday, October 17Explore Húsavik | Meals: B

Today is at leisure in the town of Húsavik or you can book an optional excursion. Overnight at Fosshotel Húsavik

Excursion Options Today:

Whale Watching | Duration: 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 1:15 p.m.-4:15 p.m., $94 per person
Discover the magnificent nature of Skjálfandi Bay in Húsavík, where you can see whales, dolphins, and sea birds in their natural habitat. A professional and highly qualified crew will guide you and take you along on a smooth sailing in a traditional Icelandic oak boat to explore the home of the whales.
Whale Watching Express | Duration: 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., $147 per person
With this tour you glide through the water in a zodiac boat. Not only does the boat go faster, but with a maximum of 12 passengers per boat, there is no competition for the best view. You’ll head out on Skjálfandi Bay in search of nature, such as Blue whales, Humpback whales, and the Minke whale.
Horseback Riding | Duration: 10:00-11:30 a.m. or 2:00-3:30 p.m., $82 per person
Ride along the coastline near Húsavík with a fantastic view over the bay of Skjálfandi and a nice and easy ride up towards the hills above Salfarm farm.
Geosea | Duration: Varies, $38 per person
Enjoy the geothermal baths with a view today. The naturally hot sea water is rich in minerals, doing wonders for the skin! Located right on Skjálfandi Bay you can look to the west and see mountains, or below and look for whales in the water. With this you’ll get entrance to the baths and can enjoy as long as you’d like.
Northern Lights by Boat | Duration: 8:30-11:30 p.m., $90 per person
The boat will depart from Húsavík harbor and take you to the magnificent Skjálfandi bay. Enjoy the winter sailing on a traditional Icelandic oak boat while listening to the sounds of nature and look into the sky without the light pollution from the city lights. During the sailing, the experienced crew will tell you stories about the northern lights, give you more information about the area and serve you refreshments, all while searching for the lights, hoping they appear.

Sunday, October 18Return to Reykjavik | Meals: B D

This morning we will depart from the hotel for the Akureyri airport and our flight to Reykjavik. The flight departs Akureyri at 9:45 a.m. and arrives in Reykjavik at 10:30 a.m. Upon arrival in Reykjavik we will transfer to the hotel for check-in. The remainder of the day is at leisure or you can book an optional tour. We will have time to reflect together on our adventures with dinner at our hotel on our final evening in Iceland. Golden Circle Direct | Duration: 12:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., $58 per person
This popular tour allows you to experience the thrill of an erupting geyser, one of the country’s most spectacular waterfalls in Silfra, and the meeting point of Europe and America, all within one day. Visit the high-temperature geothermal area known as Geysir, the nearby Gullfoss waterfall, and Þingvellir National Park, the site of Iceland´s ancient parliament, all within six hours.
Wonders of Iceland | Duration: Varies, $33 per person
This ticket includes entrance to Perlan, a world-class museum that provides deep insight into Iceland’s unique nature. Visitors will feel the power of volcanoes, earthquakes, and geothermal energy, as well as see a 10-meter-high realistically rendered bird cliff, rich with bird and plant specimens. You will experience oceanic wonders and watch as whales swim below your feet. Walk through a 100-meter-long real Ice Cave, the first of its kind in the world, and learn about Icelandic glaciers, their bleak future, and the effects of global warming in an amazing interactive exhibition. On the fourth floor of Perlan, a large observation deck lies on the top of the hot water tanks and encircles the entire dome to give an amazing 360° view of Reykjavík and the surrounding area. Access to the observation deck is included in the Wonders of Iceland Exhibition ticket.
Hop On Hop Off Bus | Duration: Ticket valid for 24 hours, $34 per person
Take a bus tour to do some city sightseeing and explore Reykjavík at your leisure, with the opportunity to hop on and off at conveniently located bus stops. Stops include Harpa Concert Hall, Perlan, Halgrimskirkja, Hofdi House, and many other well-known Reykjavik sights.
Reykjavik Food Walk | Duration: 12:30-4:00 p.m., $110 per person
The Reykjavík Food Tour is one of the best ways to get acquainted with the city and its culture. In addition to having a small group walking tour of Reykjavík with a local guide, you also stop at various dining establishments across the city and sample some of the best native Icelandic treats. The foods you will try include an Icelandic yogurt called Skyr, locally made cheeses, ice cream, a traditional Icelandic Hot Dog, seafood soup, and more! The tour lasts from 3-4 hours and is open to all ages.
Northern Lights by Boat | Duration: 9:00-11 p.m./12:00 a.m., $90 per person
The original Northern Lights by Boat tour in Iceland! Hunting the northern lights from the ocean is an amazing experience; sailing away from the coastline of Reykjavik and seeing the aurora borealis out on the North-Atlantic Ocean with beautiful mountains and the city lights in the background is something you won’t forget! In only 15-30 minutes we will be on a prime location away from the city lights, perfect for viewing the auroras! We are unconfined by roadways! Overalls provided on board will keep you nice and warm out on the deck, listening to what the guide has to say about the lovely colors dancing in the sky. Throughout the tour we show our very own original Northern Lights video, full of interesting facts and folklore!
Northern Lights by Minibus | Duration: 8:30 p.m./12:30 a.m., $83 per person
Tonight, you’ll be taken out of the city, away from the light pollution that can ruin chances of seeing the northern lights. While your destination will not be determined until that time when your guide can take weather into account, wherever you go Iceland will be sure to wow you with its natural beauty. If the northern lights show themselves tonight your guide will be taking pictures, so you can be sure to have your own picture with Aurora Borealis.

Monday, October 19Depart Reykjavik, Iceland | Meals: B

You will have time at leisure in Reykjavik before transferring to the airport for the late afternoon flight with Icelandair. This free time can also be used for an optional visit to the Blue Lagoon. The coach to the airport will depart at 2:00 p.m. then stop to pick up those of our group at the Blue Lagoon before arriving at the airport. Our flight departs at 4:45 p.m., with arrival in Minneapolis at 6:10 p.m.– Or extend your stay in Scandinavia!

Blue Lagoon | Duration: 9:15 a.m.-2:30 p.m., $115 per person
Arrive at the Blue Lagoon for entrance at 10:00 a.m. to enjoy relaxing in the geothermal pool. The mineral rich water is a milky shade of blue and the soothing and healing effects on the skin have been experienced by visitors for 40 years. Your entrance includes the self-applied silica mud mask to soften and clean the skin, towel usage, and your first drink in the lagoon. You will leave the lagoon feeling clean, relaxed, and satisfied. You will be picked up at 2:30 p.m. by the coach to the airport for check-in.
