Svalbard, Norway, a remote Arctic archipelago found along the 80th parallel, is halfway between Norway and the North Pole. It is home to the Seed Vault, and is an important research center for scientists from all over the world. It also features stunning landscapes, a fascinating history and unique wildlife, including polar bears. Svalbard is an excellent destination for visitors to experience arctic life, and learn about climate change.

This August, join Twin Cities meteorologist Sven Sundgaard and Borton Overseas Scandinavia Supervisor Nicole Anderson, on a journey to discover Arctic Norway! On this Borton Overseas Signature Journey we head to 80° north to see the extraordinary landscape, glaciers, and wildlife of the arctic archipelago of Svalbard. With a special focus on climate change and Sven’s personal knowledge and experience to lead the way, this is sure to be a fantastic and informative trip. If luck is on our side, we may even get a glimpse of the iconic polar bears that call this land home! We hope you will join us on this journey rich in science, history, and extraordinary experiences.

Sunday, August 12Arrive Oslo, Norway | Meals: D

Upon arrival in Oslo, meet special host Sven Sundgaard, a Twin Cities meteorologist. A message from Sven:

Come see why I love Norway so much! Norway is the home of my ancestors, and one of the most beautiful countries on the planet. Join me to the island in the far north, and in the Arctic Circle, Svalbard, where we may see polar bears and witness the front lines of climate change. The winter of 2016-2017 saw record low amounts of arctic sea ice. So let’s learn, see, explore, and of course have a lot of fun in the land of the midnight SUN.

Our journey begins by transferring into Oslo city center with a short city tour. The tour includes Holmenkollen, Vigelandsparken, and the Bygdøy Peninsula. After the tour, the group will be dropped off at the hotel for check-in. Tonight we will enjoy a welcome dinner at the hotel. Overnight at Thon Hotel Opera

Monday, August 13Oslo - Svalbard | Meals: B

After breakfast at the hotel, we transfer to the airport for a morning flight to Longyearbyen, the capital of Svalbard. Upon arrival in Longyearbyen, we will transfer to the hotel. From the hotel we will be taken on a tour of Longyearbyen, including the Global Seed Vault, where Sven will hold a lecture on the importance of the seed vault due to climate change. The day will also include a brewery tour and tasting at Svalbard Brewery. Enjoy remainder of evening at leisure. Overnight at Radisson Blu Polar Hotel

Tuesday, August 14Longyearbyen & Cruise Departure | Meals: B L D

Before boarding the ship this afternoon, we tour the Svalbard Museum and Gallery Svalbard. The museum has in-depth history of the island and what you will encounter on your voyage. We will then board the ship to start our journey through Isfjord and on to Barentsburg, which is a Russian settlement with a population of about 500. You can explore the mining town by joining a folklore show, taking in the old Russian artifacts and architecture, or experiencing the Russian atmosphere in the local pub. Overnight on board

Wednesday, August 15Nature and Fjords | Meals: B L D

Today we reach Northwest Spitsbergen National Park. Here we will find many different types of terrain and wildlife as we travel deep inside the Woodfjord and see Monaco Glacier. In this area we have a good chance of seeing polar bears, so be on the lookout! Other wildlife commonly spotted are ducks, whales, and seals. As this is an expedition cruise, our exact routes and landings will be dictated by the weather and sea conditions. If the weather permits, we will also sail past 80 degrees north, toward Moffen Island, which is often a spot for walrus to lounge. Overnight on board

Thursday, August 16Glaciers and Exploration | Meals: B L D

On this day we will see landscape varying from tundra plains to alpine peaks as we enter the largest fjord on the northwest coast of Spitsbergen, Kongsfjord. If the weather permits, we will sail into Krossfjord, an offshoot of Kongsfjord. At the beginning of Kongsfjord you will take in the Mitra Mountain. At the end of the fjord you will find the majestic King’s Glacier, Kongsbreen, where you can spend some time listening to the calving glacier. Later in the day the ship docks in Ny-Ålesund, one of the world’s northernmost year-round communities. The town is now a center for Arctic research. Overnight on board

Friday, August 17Isfjorden | Meals: B L D

Today we sail back into Isfjord, located in central Spitsbergen, on our way back to Longyearbyen. Along the way you will marvel at Alkhornet Mountain and the large valleys created by enormous glaciers that covered the area tens of thousands of years ago. In the afternoon the boat will arrive in Longyearbyen and you can enjoy free time in the city before a dinner is provided for us at the hotel. Overnight at Radisson Blu Polar Hotel
