Travel with Scandinavia Specialist Amy Tweet to chase the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis)! Tromsø, in Northern Norway, is the perfect setting for a true Arctic winter experience, and February is a great time to go hunting for the Aurora Borealis. Located in the center of the Northern Lights Oval, Tromsø and the surrounding areas offer a high probability of seeing this spectacular natural phenomena as well as a number of exciting excursions to choose from!

The perfect blend of group and individual activities, this Arctic Signature Journey lets you customize your experience depending on your interests! In Tromsø you can choose from a variety of optional excursions, including reindeer or dog sledding, snowshoeing, skiing, a snowmobile safari, a winter fjord cruise, and a traditional Sami experience.  This lively Arctic city and its friendly locals will be sure to make your time above the Arctic Circle unforgettable.

Then we head to Norway’s capital, Oslo. The city takes on a whimsical feel, covered in snow and lights. See the sights Oslo is famous for and enjoy free time to visit the many museums, warm up with a cup of coffee at a local shop, and take in the cozy culture of the city.

Sunday, February 20Arrive Tromsø, Norway | Meals: D

Morning arrival into Oslo, then connect to flight north to Tromsø, arriving around midday. Transfer by coach from the airport to our hotel in Tromsø city center, with a short city sightseeing tour en route. Time to relax before joining the group for a welcome dinner at our hotel this evening. Overnight at Scandic Ishavshotel, Tromsø

Monday, February 21Tromsø - Farm Dinner/Aurora search | Meals: B D

Today is at leisure to explore Tromsø, the Paris of the North, with its beautiful Arctic Cathedral and educational Polaria aquarium. There is also the new Troll Museum, Mack’s brewery (a favorite spot of the locals), or visit the many shops featuring a mix of local souvenirs and traditional Norwegian goods. You also have the opportunity to join an optional excursion. In the evening, the group will transfer to a nearby farm for a 3-course dinner. Learn about the farm’s history and traditions before venturing out in search of the Aurora Borealis. Overnight at Scandic Ishavshotel, Tromsø

Excursion Options Today:

Winter Fjord & Wildlife Cruise, 8:00am-1:30pm, $197 – Enjoy an electric boat cruise through unspoiled nature. If lucky, we may spot whales, seals, or sea eagles. Visit a local fishing village and learn about its traditions. Observation deck plus indoor heated lounge is available on board. A warm stew lunch is included.
Guided Cross-Country Skiing, 8:30am-11:30am or 1:00pm-4:00pm, $128 – Learn to cross country ski in a scenic and relaxed environment. The instructor will teach you how to put the skis on, off, fall down, get up, walk and run with the skis. Gaining some practice, you will challenge yourself with small hills.
Sámi Experience with Reindeer Feeding, 9:00am to 2-3pm, $165 – Interact with the friendly reindeer on this visit to a Sámi camp in the Lyngen Alps, surrounded by stunning scenery. Feed the reindeer while your guide explains the Sámi relationship with the reindeer, followed by a warm drink and snack in the lavvu tent.
Snowmobile Safari, 9:00am-4:00pm, $251 – Venture out into the wilderness and mountains of Finn valley. No previous skills are required to drive a snowmobile, though a driver’s license is required. Ride the 22km trail between snow-covered mountains to a frozen lake and back. Drive in pairs, taking turns. Afterwards, you will be served a hot meal around an open fire in the Sami herder’s lavvu tent.
Reindeer Sledding & Sami Culture, 10:00am-3:00pm, $256 – Experience the oldest form of transport in the north, and an ancient part of Sami culture. The sledding trail provides an amazing view of the wild mountains. You will drive in pairs, with one sled for each reindeer. This cultural adventure includes an opportunity to feed the reindeer herd, learn about Sami culture and history, plus a hot meal and drinks.
Dog Sledding, 9:00am-4:00 p.m., $251 – After meeting the dogs and receiving instructions, you will drive the dog sled into the white landscapes, through the beautiful valley. The trails have a total distance of approx. 12 km, an uninhabited mountains and forest landscape. You will drive in pairs, one driver and one passenger on each sled, with opportunity to switch. Afterwards, return to camp for a hot meal served in our heated lavvu tent.
Guided Snowshoeing, 10:00am-12:00pm, $103 – Follow the guide on a snowshoe walk through the scenic birch and spruce forest. Find our favorite sites and hear stories about the local people. The snowshoes allow us to wander through snowy terrain with ease. Includes equipment and refreshment.

Tuesday, February 22Tromsø - Northern Lights Chase | Meals: B

Today, you will have time on your own for an optional excursion, or you can relax and explore Tromsø. In the evening at 7pm, the group will depart out into the Arctic night to enjoy a Northern Lights chase excursion with guide and refreshments. Duration: 6 hours, including transfers. Overnight at Scandic Ishavshotel, Tromsø

Wednesday, February 23Tromsø - Oslo | Meals: B

This morning we transfer by coach to the Tromsø airport for our late morning flight to Oslo. We arrive mid-day and transfer by coach to Oslo and our city center hotel. En route, we will stop at several of Oslo’s famous sites and receive a sightseeing tour of the city. The remainder of day is at your leisure. Overnight at Hotel Bristol, Oslo

Thursday, February 24Exploring Oslo | Meals: B D

Today is at leisure for your own exploration of Norway’s capital using your 24-hour Oslo Pass, which offers free or discounted admission to most attractions, along with free use of public transportation. Tonight, the group will enjoy a farewell dinner together at the hotel. Overnight at Hotel Bristol, Oslo

Friday, February 25Depart Oslo, Norway | Meals: B, in-fl

After breakfast and check-out, the group will transfer by coach from our Oslo hotel to Gardermoen Airport in connection with our departing flight back to Minneapolis/St Paul, via Newark.
