What aspect of travel do you enjoy the most?

The unknown of new destinations. I love uncovering what’s special, getting off-the-beaten path, experiencing the nature, and making the most of every day.

What is one thing you would never travel without?

I tend to over pack, so there are obviously several things I would never travel without. LOL!

What has been your most life-changing travel experience?

People from all over the world, speaking different languages, traveling with their friends, and families – enjoying life. I have had 2 experiences where there was a language barrier, but I was still able to communicate with the other person, both extremely rewarding. One situation was an older man traveling alone who had been robbed – he was in a country where they didn’t speak his language, and he didn’t speak English. I didn’t speak his language either, but I communicated with him the best I could, using hand gestures, trying to understand. Then I spoke with the police and after some time convincing them to assist, they drove him to his Embassy. The whole process took quite awhile, and I missed the train I’d planned to take, but I was happy I’d taken the time to help him. He showed me such gratitude as he got in the police car for the drive to the Embassy. The events that day made a huge impact on me, and I continue to help others in small ways that will matter to them.

What has traveling taught you about yourself?

I have patience. Traveling is unpredictable – delays, snafus, complications and other incidents are beyond my control. I can “go with the flow”, and realize I can’t do anything to change the situation. I feel great that I have that trait, and it’s valuable in all aspects of my life.

What is your favorite destination, and why?

That’s a very difficult question! Norway is very special to me, due to my heritage, having studied and lived there, and traveled all over. I feel it’s my second home. Norway’s nature, history, culture and stunning landscapes draw me back, and I never tire of it. All of the other destinations I’ve visited have fascinating aspects and their own appeal. However, destinations where I can view wildlife are my favorite – Antarctica, Galapagos Islands, Namibia…the animals really are mesmerizing!
