Ana Greenland, Ilulissat Tour

Ana Cline Hughes

Scandinavia Specialist

Biography

Ana first fell in love with Norway during her studies at St. Olaf College, where she studied the Norwegian language and Nordic Studies.

From a young age, she has been passionate about travel, diversity and other cultures. After college, she spent four years working in Kristiansand, Norway with a non-profit organization that allowed her to travel extensively both in Norway and to parts of Southeast Asia and India. She enjoys helping others plan trips to her “home away from home” in Norway; most recently, she co-led Borton Overseas Signature Journey- Norwegian Christmas Experience.

Ana’s travel interests and specialties include family heritage trips, honeymoon trips, Norwegian language and linguistics, Nordic art, music, and holiday traditions.

What aspect of travel do you enjoy the most?

My favorite thing about travel is meeting new people and learning about different cultures. Oh, and I love to try new food (and coffee) whenever I travel! Some of my favorite travel memories include sharing food with local tour guides or friends in countries abroad over a home-cooked meal as we share laughs, life stories, and a good meal, along with a good hot cup of coffee or chai tea.

What is one thing you would never travel without?

I always make sure to bring a travel journal or notebook, so that I can write about my impressions, feelings and memories of the places I visit. Even with all our modern technology, I love physically writing about the places I visit and having those journaled, hand-written memories for years to come. Oh, and since we are dependent on technology as well, I always make sure to bring the correct travel adapter/plug adapter with me as well!

What has been your most life-changing travel experience?

It’s hard to pick just one, so here is the top 3 (in no particular order)
1. Climbing Preikestolen (the Pulpit Rock) in Norway
2. Taking an overnight train from southern India up to New Dehli
3. Visiting the Ilulissat Icefjord in Greenland

What has traveling taught you about yourself?

To learn and listen! Traveling opens up a world of meeting new people and hearing their stories, and seeing the world and learning about our collective histories and humanity. One of the best things about traveling is the people we encounter- whether it is distant relatives, new friends along the way, tour guides or hosts- and the stories and histories they can share with us.

What is your favorite destination, and why?

Having lived and worked in Norway for nearly 5 years, it will always hold a special place in my heart, as my “home away from home.” The people, the culture and the NATURE of Norway are truly special and I love helping clients visit Norway!
