Alyssa manages our social media, designs ads, writes newsletters, updates the website, and comes up with exciting ways to get our journeys known (and if you are reading this, it’s working)! She never dreamed her Communications degree from the University of North Dakota would lead her to a job in the travel industry, but she is so glad it did! She enjoys the diversity of working with all the departments, learning new things about the extraordinary places we travel to, and adding to her ever-growing travel Life List.

A lover of cruises (and penguins!), her favorite destination to promote is Antarctica. She had the opportunity to travel to the White Continent in February of 2017 on one of our Signature Journeys, and she hasn’t stopped talking about it since! Nothing compares to watching glaciers calve, interacting with the wildlife (at a safe distance of course), and taking a quick polar plunge in Antarctic waters!

What aspect of travel do you enjoy the most?

I love cruising! I enjoy unpacking once, but still getting to have a wide variety of experiences in different places. The “at sea” days give you the opportunity to actually relax and read a book. And the food is amazing! You also can’t beat sleeping on a ship where the waves will lull you to sleep.

What is one thing you would never travel without?

I always pack a small travel humidifier. I have allergies and (as some of you may know) there is nothing worse for them than sleeping in a very dry hotel room. The humidifier helps me sleep better and wake rested, ready for the next adventure.

What has been your most life-changing travel experience?

Definitely my trip to Antarctica. There is nothing quite the like sitting on the beach listening to penguins and seals, as you look out at ice capped mountains and the ocean, and then it was time to swim! My polar plunge in Antarctica was one of my favorite experiences. It was exhilarating, exciting, and, yes, cold! We stripped down to our swimwear, waddled into the water (much like the penguins), flopped around for a few moments (much like the seals), took a quick dunk complete with some sputtering (just like the whales), and then it was back to the ship to warm up with some hot chocolate and a hot shower! It was brief but definitely worth it!

Antarctica changed me. I have become an explorer and the compulsion to GO has grown stronger. Every doorway holds the possibility of a new adventure; every road has the potential to lead somewhere new and exciting. Next time, and yes, there will be a next time, I want to see more. I want to cross the Antarctic Circle, go farther inland, camp overnight, and maybe even stay for an Antarctic winter.

What has traveling taught you about yourself?

Traveling has taught me three things:
1. I like to get off the beaten track. I want to go out into the countryside, escape the crowds and tourists, and really experience the nature of a destination.
2. You have to be flexible. Nothing is ever going to go exactly as planned, and that is OK. Actually letting yourself be a little spontaneous is when some of the best experiences happen.
3. That I love photography! Taking pictures while traveling has led me to a lifelong hobby. I really enjoy the challenge of photographing wildlife, especially birds.

What is your favorite destination, and why?

Antarctica! I loved going somewhere that is virtually untouched by mankind. It gave me the opportunity to see the world as it was meant to be. It was a slower paced trip where I could really let myself appreciate my surroundings. It was never too crowded or hot 😉 And of course I got to meet hundreds of penguins, my all-time favorite animal! Antarctica is definitely a place I will see again some day!
