Optional Excursions Today:

A Ghost Town – Pyramiden | Duration: 6 hours, $235 per person
Join this environmentally friendly boat trip, to the Nordenskïold glacier and the fascinating Russian ghost town of Pyramiden. Visiting the town of Pyramiden is like entering a time machine and returning to the Soviet Union. In the 1980s, over 1000 people lived in the city, and it was considered a successful community with school, kindergarten, swimming pool, sports fields, and coal mining. In 1998, the Russian mining company Trust Arktikugol closed the coal mine, and the city was vacated in a very short time. Coffee cups are left behind on the tables, books are scattered in the classroom, and the sheet music lies ready on the piano – waiting for someone to play. These days only a handful of people work and live in the city, and for visitors it is a very special experience to get a guided tour around the abandoned buildings. Lunch is included along the way.
Please note: The conditions on Svalbard change a lot throughout the year. Early in the season the Billefjord may still be covered with ice and landing in Pyramiden will then not be possible. The boat will then instead follow the ice edge, where the opportunity to see wildlife is great!

Barentsburg | Duration: 5 hours, $198 per person
Join this environmentally friendly boat trip to Ymer Bay and Esmark glacier, as well as the exciting Russian settlement of Barentsburg. Barentsburg is, with its 450 inhabitants, Svalbard’s second largest settlement. The mining community is located on the beautiful Grønfjord and is operated and owned by the state-owned Russian mining company, Trust Arktikugol. They have their own coal-fired power stations, hospital, hotel, pub, school, kindergarten, and cultural and sports building. Although there is still mining in the city, tourism is building up to become the most important industry. It is fascinating to visit Barentsburg, combining untouched nature with Russian culture. Lunch is included along the way.

Longyearbyen in a Nutshell | Duration: 2 hours, $46 per person
As the largest town in Svalbard, Longyearbyen has a lot of interesting sights to offer visitors. Today’s tour will take you around to some of these places. You will begin in the Longyearbyen valley with a tour of the town. You will then leave town and head to Adventdalen and Mine 7. On your drive you will have the chance to see the Svalbard reindeer and migratory birds. You will also visit the site of the Global Seed Vault, storing millions of seed samples, and learn about why it is so important. You will be returned to your hotel at the end of your tour.

Visit to Mine Number 3 | Duration: 3 hours, $90 per person
Take this bus tour to Mine number 3 and step into historic Longyearbyen. Experience the life a miner had in the production days and learn about how the mining industry has shaped Longyearbyen. Your guide will lead you into the outer parts of the mine, where you’ll see the mechanical workshop, loading areas, and, with your headlamp, peek around corners at forgotten memories.

Kayak Tour in Arctic Nature | Duration: 4 hours, $132 per person
Join us on a nice activity in beautiful Adventsfjorden. Paddle out of Longyearbyen and have the majestic Hiorthfjellet in front of you. Hiorthamn is located at the seashore and is a former mining town. It was established in 1917 and the entrance to the mine is 582 meters above sea level. This is a place with a fascinating history and cultural heritage. On your trip around the fjord you can experience close contact with wildlife and bird life and get a great nature experience in the kayak.

Mountain Trip with Dog Sled | Duration: 4 hours, $199 per person
Traveling out of Longyearbyen, you will be given the proper clothing and make a stop to pick up the dogs before heading to Foxfonna, passing Mine 7 on the way. Your guide will help you harnessing and handling the dogs and attaching them to the sled before heading off with fantastic views of the surrounding valleys and Isfjorden. On the trip, the guide will drive the first sled with two guests, who will take turns at steering. Behind the guide, sleds with two guests a piece will follow. The sleds are being pulled by 5-6 dogs each.
