We’ve included some sightseeing, activities, and the Blue Lagoon. Optional excursions include whale watching, horseback riding, a Northern Lights hunt and more! Thursday, December 28  Welcome to Iceland!   B D
We arrive in Reykjavik at 6:30 am, and will meet our local guide. After breakfast, our adventure begins with an introduction to the unique landscape for which Iceland is known. We'll drive to Reykjavik via the Reykjanes Peninsula and experience the coastline, lava fields and the rift between the European and the North American tectonic plates. See one of the oldest lighthouses in Iceland, and stop at the country's largest mud pool, Gunnuhver. Enjoy an orientation tour of Reykjavik, ending at our hotel. This afternoon, take an optional excursion, relax or explore the city before our Welcome Dinner at our hotel. Overnight in Reykjavik at Radission Blu Hotel 1919

  • Horseback Riding, 1-6 pm, $98 per person
    The Icelandic Horse is calm and sturdy, and unique in that they have a 5th gait called the tolt. After your ride, enjoy coffee and a home-baked treat. All abilities. Riding gear is provided in all sizes and for all types of weather.
  • Whale Watching, 1-4 pm, $97 per person
    Winter whale watching continues to surprise visitors with the wildlife it offers. Herring and capelin are the main prey available attracting humpback whales, killer whales, white-beaked dolphins and harbor porpoises to the area.

  • Inside the Glacier, 8:30am-6:30pm, $268 per person
    Experience Langjokull glacier for an adventure deep inside the glacier. The caverns are an extensive system of tunnels and chambers that stretch close to 300 meters into the solid ice cap towards a breathtaking natural Ice Cave at the heart of the glacier. You'll be able to explore various nooks and chambers and walk over a huge ice crevasse on a specially constructed bridge. As you walk further along the tunnel, the ice gets older and its color gradually changes from white to deep-blue.
  • Golden Circle Food Tour, 9:00am-7:30 pm, $272 per person
    This combines the landscapes and highlights of the Golden Circle tour with sampling delicious food and drink along the way. Stop at Efstidalur farm where three generations share a love for the land, and a passion for farm-to-table cooking. Sample a diverse selection of homemade fresh products sure to delight your taste buds. Visit the family-operated Fridheimar greenhouse & cafe to sample some of their delicious sweet tomatoes and mouth-watering chutneys and jams. A stop will be made at Íslenski Baerinn Turf House for traditional Icelandic delicacies like pancakes with whipped cream and rhubarb jelly, flat bread, and perhaps a sip of meadow sweet honey and mead. The Turf House is one of Iceland’s best preserved turf farms, the style of building that from the time of settlement kept Icelanders alive in the harsh Arctic climate.
  • Game of Thrones Tour, 10:00am-6:00pm, $99 per person
    Visit the stomping ground of the White Walkers and the trail of the Wildlings from North of the Wall at Thingvellir National Park and get to know the symbolic significance of the setting in context to the plot. Walk around the Settlement Era Viking Lodge in Thjorsardalur valley where elaborate scenes were shot and one of the most hair raising massacres of the series took place.
  • Lava Tunnel Tour, 10:00am-1:00pm, $117 per person
    Visit the lava tunnel Raufarholshellir located only 30 minutes from Reykjavík. The lava tunnel is one of the biggest in Iceland, and here you will see the inner workings of a volcanic eruption while you walk in the path of lava which flowed thousands of years ago. The fantastic range of colors of the tunnel wall is caused by the different mineral types of the rock. Dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear. You will receive a helmet and flashlight for the tour.
  • Golden Circle Half-day Tour, 11am-5pm & 1pm-7-pm, $104 per person
    This is a great introduction to Iceland! See the Nesjavellir geothermal field, and Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site where the tectonic plates of Europe and North America meet and one of the world's oldest parliament was founded in 930 AD. See the Gullfoss (Golden Falls), majestic and thunderous as well as the Geysir geothermal area, home of the famous Geysir and Strokkur hot springs.
  • Taste the Saga Beer Tasting, 5:30-8:00pm, $67 per person
    Tour Olgerdin brewery and journey through history of brewing in Iceland, dive into the local drinking culture, taste beer and other beverages from Olgerdin's main brewery as well as a selection of ambitious beers from their award-winning craft brewery, Borg Brugghus
  • Northern Lights* Mystery Tour, 7:30pm, $62 per person
    This guided motor coach tour will take you out of the city lights into the countryside and complete darkness in hope of seeing the skies glow. When Northern Lights have been spotted, you will be able to go outside and see the fantastic shapes and colors in the dark sky. You will have plenty of time to take photos and truly enjoy the moment.

    There’s a reason that so many movies and programs are filmed in Iceland – it has some of the most stunning and inspiring landscapes that you can imagine. You will get to visit the haunted mountain of Hjorleifshofdi where parts of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) was filmed. Step into the world of Norse gods at the Skogafoss waterfall, which was featured in the filming of Thor 2: The Dark World (2013). The waterfall isn’t just fit for gods, it was also where The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) and Dilwale (2015) were partly filmed. See the abandoned US Navy plane wreck at the black sands of Solheimasandur - definitely a must-see site. The plane appeared in one of Justin Bieber´s music videos, "I’ll Show You". After visiting these locations, you’ll want to watch your movies all over again!

Sunday, December 31  Aurora, Cheese & New Year's Eve   B L D
After breakfast, we'll head over to the Aurora Reykjavik for an exhibition on Northern Lights. Here we will hear stories and legends about the northern lights from around the world.  We will also learn about the science behind this amazing phenomenon and see spectacular Northern Lights photography from top Icelandic photographers. Continue to the Cheese & Skyr School to delve into Iceland's cheese history and discover what cheesetastic future lies ahead for this nation of people who have the third largest consumption of cheese in the world. Afternoon is at leisure before we meet for our special dinner tonight.

Transfer from your hotel to Harpa concert Hall where we will enjoy a welcome drink. A festive 4-course gala dinner is served on the ground floor with amazing views over the downtown harbor and the bay of Reykjavik. After the main course, we will be picked up by our guide for the Reykjavik Bonfire & Christmas Lights Tour where we celebrate with Icelanders at one of the many bonfires that are situated all over the city. The tour takes about 2 hours between 8:30-10:30 pm. After the tour, we go back to Harpa Concert Hall for dessert. At midnight, with sparkling wine, we celebrate the New Year and experience the one-of-a-kind fireworks for which Iceland's capital is famous. Then we dance the night away to a local live band. Monday, January 1  HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!    B
Breakfast at the hotel. We'll check out and drive through the lava fields to the Blue Lagoon for a swim in the mineral-rich, geothermal water.

The Blue Lagoon:
The geothermal water is led directly to the Blue Lagoon from wells as deep as 2000 meters/6000 feet and the water stays warm and inviting at 36-39°C/100-110°F throughout the whole year. The Blue Lagoon's warm water and natural active ingredients, mineral salts, silica and blue-green algae help you relax and escape the stress and strain of daily life. 

Optional: 

  • Blue Lagoon In-water Massage, 30 minutes, $110 per person
    Treat yourself to a unique, open-air massage which will take place in the lagoon itself! This relaxing massage will use massage oil that contains Blue Lagoon active ingredients and essential oils. The pre-booked, in-water massages are available for 30 minutes. 

Depart from the Blue Lagoon early afternoon for transfer to the airport. Depart on Icelandair at 4:45pm, arrive Minneapolis at 5:05pm.
