Discover the joy and traditions of the Finnish Christmas! We’re pleased to present our fourth annual Christmas-themed Signature Journey! This year we are heading above the Arctic Circle to spend a few days in Finland’s Santa Claus Village. Then we travel south to Helsinki to explore the capital and shop at one of the famous Christmas Markets.

Join Borton Overseas Scandinavia Director, Betina Kohler, on this festive pre-holiday trip to Finland. Shop the Christmas Markets, learn about Christmas traditions in Finland, as well as all over the world, and hopefully see the Northern Lights during your time above the Arctic Circle at the Santa Claus Village. This is a great opportunity to get in the holiday spirit for the year and find some unique gifts for under the tree. Option to extend your stay in Finland or elsewhere!

Friday, November 30  Depart Minneapolis
Depart on Icelandair at 6:30 pm. 

Saturday, December 1  Arrive Rovaniemi   D
Arrive in Reykjavik at 6:30 am, and change planes, departing at 7:30 am. Arrive in Helsinki at 12:55 pm and connect with flight to Rovaniemi, the official home of Santa Claus! With arrival in Rovaniemi at 5:40 pm, we will transfer to the Santa Claus Village, where the group will check in to their cottage accommodations. A welcome dinner will be provided at the Village. Overnight at Santa Claus Holiday Village

Sunday, December 2  Christmas Exhibition   B D
Breakfast at the hotel. Morning and afternoon at leisure to explore the Christmas Exhibition. Learn about the real Santa Claus, the history of the Christmas tree, and Christmas traditions, new and old, from around the world. There is an Elves' Toy workshop and you may even get to meet Santa Claus! Dinner included at village. Overnight at Santa Claus Holiday Village

Optional Excursions Today:

  • Traditional Lappish Evening, 6:00 pm-10:00 pm, $158 per person
    This evening you can enjoy a traditional Lappish dinner and sauna. You will be transferred to a log house where you will enjoy the sauna and winter swimming! After you will enjoy a meal prepared over an open fire before transferring back to the hotel.
  • Northern Lights by Minibus*, 8:00 pm-11:00 pm, $125 per person
    Take a bus away from the city lights in search of the Northern Lights. When you find an appropriate viewing area, the guide will build a fire to keep you warm and cook some Finnish Sausages for a snack.

Monday, December 3  Day Tour   B D
Breakfast at the hotel. Enjoy day at leisure or book one of the following tours. Dinner included at resort. Overnight at Santa Claus Holiday Village

Optional Excursions Today:

  • Reindeer and Huskies, 10:30 am-3:00 pm, $185 per person
    Enjoy a 30 minute reindeer sleigh ride followed by a half mile husky ride. After the rides, enjoy a warm soup lunch at the farm.
  • Snowmobile Safari to Wilderness Lodge, 9:00 am-2:00 pm, $205 per person
    Cut through the forest trails on snowmobile, heading north out of the village. Along the journey you will make many stops to enjoy the nature and landscapes. After you arrive at the lodge a hot soup will be prepared and eaten by campfire. During this time you can also explore the area by foot. After lunch you will turn back toward the village.
  • Korouma National Park, 10:00 am-4:00 pm, $158 per person
    Travel to the Korouma National Park’s most beautiful sites. During the tour you walk 3-4 miles, see ice waterfalls up close, and enjoy a picnic lunch by fire.
  • Reindeer Farm and Sleigh Ride, 1:45 pm-4:30 pm, $144 per person
    Visit a reindeer farm to experience the traditional Sami culture, which is centralized around the Reindeer. Tour the farm, feed the reindeer and take a one hare sleigh ride on this tour.
  • Santa’s Fun Day, 12:00 pm-4:00 pm, $149 per person
    Have some fun in North Camp Vaattunkilampi. At the camp you will be able to try several Finnish winter activities that are fun for all ages. Activities include snowmobiling by sleigh, ice fishing, a toboggan carousel, lassoing, and more.
  • Husky Farm and Ride, 1:45 pm-4:30 pm, $199 per person
    If you have ever wanted to experience dog sledding, this is the tour for you. Visit the farm before heading out for two hours in the forest, mushing your own dog team as you whisk silently through the snowy forest.
  • Ice Water Experience, 5:45 pm-9:50 pm, $116 per person
    Dip in a cold lake under the stars, and possibly Northern Lights! Head out to a private area where a hole has been cut in the ice and put on a floating suit. The floating suit will keep you warm while you are in the icy water. If the weather is clear, you may be able to marvel at the Northern Lights while lying in the water.
  • Northern Lights by Minibus*, 8:00 pm-11:00 pm, $125 per person
    Take a bus away from the city lights in search of the Northern Lights. When you find an appropriate viewing area, the guide will build a fire to keep you warm and cook some Finnish Sausages for a snack.

Tuesday, December 4  Helsinki   B
Depart Rovaniemi at 9:40 am and arrive in Helsinki at 10:55 am.

Collect luggage and transfer the Cumulus Kaisaniemi Hotel located in the city center. The biggest Christmas Market in the city is located just a seven minute walk away! Use the rest of the afternoon to explore this wonderful market.

At 6:00 pm, meet in the hotel lobby for transfer to the Finnish National Opera for a performance of The Nutcracker ballet. After the performance, a transfer will be provided to the hotel again. Overnight at Cumulus Kaisaniemi Hotel

Wednesday, December 5  Depart Helsinki   B
Breakfast at the hotel. You have some time for last minute shopping and sightseeing before your mid-morning transfer to the airport. Depart at 2:20 pm, arrive in Reykjavik 3:55 pm. Change planes, depart at 4:45 pm, arrive Minneapolis 5:05 pm. – or extend your stay in Scandinavia!


  • Roundtrip transatlantic air provided by Icelandair in Economy Class from Minneapolis/St. Paul, including air taxes and fuel surcharges and one checked bag

*The Northern Lights tours are dependent on weather and therefore sightings are not guaranteed. The Northern Lights are in the northern sky from September through April but are only visible when the sky is clear and free of clouds. Like many of natures wonders, it’s ephemeral – they may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone.
